Summer Walker has reportedly been sued by her record label, Interscope Records, for attempting to terminate her record contract early.

The singer reportedly signed a joint deal with UMG and Interscope and decided to invoke California's seven-year statute to terminate the contract early. California's “seven-year rule,” limits personal-services contracts, including recording agreements, to seven years. In response, Interscope has sued the singer for $50 million for failing to complete the last two albums she contractually agreed to.

According to Rolling Stone, Interscope argues that Walker’s “failure to deliver” all the recordings required under her contract leaves her liable for damages. According to the complaint, her original 2017 agreement and subsequent amendments obligated her to deliver five studio albums, with her earlier projects, Last Day of Summer and CLEAR, classified as “pre-album projects” that did not count toward that album total.

Walker's attorney, Keith Moten, said the singer plans to countersue the label, yet remains open to "constructive resolution." He also told Rolling Stone that they are aware of the lawsuit Interscope filed. He continued, “While we are disappointed that Interscope has chosen to pursue litigation, we are confident in Summer’s legal position and her right to challenge the continued enforceability of her recording contract with Interscope,” read the statement. “We intend to vigorously defend against Interscope’s claims and pursue appropriate legal relief.”

Walker, who is also a guitarist and songwriter, has reportedly sold over 5.3 million albums. She was discovered after uploading several cover songs to YouTube.

Her song "Girls Need Love" gained massive attention and became her most popular song, appearing on the mix track Last Day of Summer (2018). She's recorded features with J. Cole, Usher, Drake, and SZA.

Since entering the industry, the Atlanta songstress has had three children: a daughter and twin sons. Her lawyer says she remains focused on her artistry and children, despite her current legal situation.
