The Satanic Temple in Chesapeake, Virginia, which offers the 'After-School Satan Club,' says people shouldn't be alarmed by the name of the club. The promoters of this organization said the name is no big deal and that Satan "is just an imaginary figure that we look to because he is the eternal rebel that fought for justice and humanity."
This club reportedly begins this month and will be held at B.M. Williams Primary School. The After School Satan Club (ASSC) explained to the news outlet (Wavy.com) that they aim to offer alternatives to Christian principles, but their program's tenants teach students to be good people, and they will study bible scriptures. Their website says part of their focus is on science, critical thinking, and creative arts. However, they do not state the specific aspects of the Bible that they plan to teach or outline the club's principles.
While the school board has not voted in favor of the club, by law, the school district will likely have to allow the program to be housed at one of its buildings because public funding pays for school buildings and has to allow for community use outside of school hours.
It appears that the law of separation of church and state can't prevent this organization from being practiced on school grounds.
