Nicki Minaj and the Department of Justice accosted former CNN reporter Don Lemon over his post-death coverage of Renee Good, a Minneapolis citizen who was murdered by an ICE agent on January 7th.
The Twin Cities have seen numerous protests following Good's untimely death. Some citizens are demonstrating their solidarity with the late mother of three by openly carrying firearms in public, in an attempt to display that they will protect local citizens from ICE.
On Sunday, Don Lemon followed a group of protesters, including Nekima Levy Armstrong, a lawyer and civil rights attorney, into Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the protesters shouted “ICE out!” Armstrong challenged the congregation's pastor, David Easterwood, questioning his faith in God. She stated, "David Easterwood is a pastor here; he is also the director of the field office for ICE in Saint Paul. Someone who claims to worship God, teaching people in this church about God, is out there overseeing ICE agents. How dare you claim to be a pastor of God while being involved in evil in our community?"
Shortly thereafter, Lemon spoke with Pastor Easterwood, who described the protest as "unacceptable" and "shameful." He continued, "It's shameful to interrupt a public gathering of Christians in worship." Lemon asked the pastor if he thought Jesus would understand and try to love immigrants as Christians should. Lemon also asked Easterwood if anyone had tried to talk to the immigrants. The pastor replied, "No one has been willing to talk."

Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice, addressed Lemon on X (formerly Twitter). She stated, “A house of worship is not a public forum for your protest! It is a space protected from exactly such acts by federal criminal and civil laws! Nor does the First Amendment protect your pseudo-journalism of disrupting a prayer service.” “You are on notice!”
Nicki Minaj also joined the online debate, calling for Lemon's arrest. She declared, "How dare you? I want that thug in jail!... He would never do that to any other religion. Lock him up!" Minaj, who immigrated to America from Trinidad, further criticized Lemon online, using derogatory gay terminology to describe him.

In response, Lemon told Minaj the subject matter is "out of your depth." He reminded viewers that she is an undocumented immigrant and brought up her husband Kenneth Petty's status as a registered sex offender. The now-independent journalist also told TMZ that Minaj is a "pick me" who will do anything to be politically "expedient." He labeled her as "ignorant," "homophobic," and a "bigot," expressing that she shows disdain for African Americans and should not be supported by the black or gay communities. He suggested that Minaj should "sit the fu** down," implying that her motivations may be linked to seeking leniency for her husband and brother, Jelani Maraj, who is serving time for the alleged sexual assault of an 11-year-old child.
Lemon concluded his comments with clear instructions, by telling the "Anaconda" rapper to "fu** off," urging her to stop being a homophobic bigot, and advising her to get a life and some brains.
