David Courvelle, a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) employee in Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a female detainee from Nicaragua at the Basile detention center.
According to the Shreveport Times, Courvelle was charged with a single count of sexual abuse of a ward or individual in federal custody, which entails a maximum prison sentence of 15 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Courvelle reportedly supervised and disciplined the detainees. The Shreveport Times also reports that he had multiple interactions with the detainee, which he claims were consensual. He allegedly smuggled items for her, including photos of her daughter, in exchange for their sexual relationship. Additionally, he was accused of using other inmates as "lookouts" during these encounters.
The officer and the detainee were seen leaving a janitorial closet together in July. Courvelle resigned on July 30 after being confronted about phone calls exchanged between him and the detainee.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 10.
