DJ Casper, the Cha-Cha Slide creator, passed away at 58 from Cancer on Monday. DJ Casper told Chicago's ABC 7 network that in 2016 he was diagnosed with kidney and liver cancer, and his doctors felt it would be too risky to perform surgery; therefore, he was receiving treatments.
He created his uber-popular "Cha-Cha Slide" for his nephew, a fitness instructor in Chicago. Still, the song went viral, eventually becoming an international party anthem. DJ Casper told ABC 7, "When I first did it, I did it as an aerobic exercise for my nephew at Bally's." "From there, it just took off. Elroy Smith from WGCI grabbed ahold of it." The midwest DJ was proud of his work; he explained, "I have one of the biggest songs that played at all stadiums: hockey, basketball, football, baseball; they played it at the Olympics," Casper said. "It was something that everybody could do." The original version has over 21 million downloads on Spotify.
His wife Kim announced that he passed away while surrounded by loved ones. She shared, "Casper was a fun-loving, giving person." "He was a genuine, family oriented man. He loved Chicago with all his heart. He will be greatly missed." May he rest in peace.
