Content creator Johnny Somali has been sentenced to six months in jail in South Korea after being deemed a public nuisance. The YouTuber sparked outrage in Seoul when he kissed and gyrated on a historical statue honoring Asian women who were forced into sexual slavery during World War II. His actions included disturbing citizens while creating content and playing loud music in public.

According to the BBC, Seoul authorities charged him with public nuisance in November 2024 after he posted a video of himself kissing the statue and performing lap dances on it during his visit to South Korea. Since then, he has been barred from leaving the country.

On Wednesday, the 25-year-old American, whose legal name is Ismael Ramsey Khalid, was convicted of multiple charges, including public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes. The South Korean courts stated, "The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law," according to South Korean media outlets.

The Korea Herald reported that prosecutors had initially sought a three-year prison term; however, the judges issued a lower sentence, noting the "absence of severe harm to victims."

Reports indicate that Johnny was verbally confronting locals and challenging them to fights, with several videos emerging on social media showing him being punched and chased by bystanders. He also reportedly caused a disturbance on public transportation, vandalized a convenience store, and streamed obscene content in public.

According to BBC, the YouTuber was detained at a protest in Tel Aviv, Israel, for making inappropriate remarks towards a female police officer, but was later released.

While in Japan, he allegedly taunted locals with insensitive comments about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

There is speculation that Somali could potentially be classified as a sex offender in South Korea.
