Eric Dane, the actor best known for his role on "Grey's Anatomy," passed away on Thursday after a brief battle with ALS. He was 53 years old.
In 2025, Eric announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. According to PBS, his team shared a heartfelt message: "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received."
Among other projects, Dane is most remembered for portraying Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as McSteamy, on "Grey's Anatomy." He also portrayed Cal Jacobs in HBO's "Euphoria" until his passing.
As an ALS spokesperson, Eric delivered a statement at an ALS event in June 2025. He said, "Some of you may know me from TV shows like 'Grey's Anatomy,' where I play a doctor. However, I am here today to share my experience as a patient battling ALS."
In his final message, shared through a Netflix clip while wheelchair-bound, Eric addressed his daughters and the world before passing away. He said to Billie and Georgia, "These words are for you. "I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn't we?" He reminisced about the wonderful times they shared at different beaches with their mother, mentioning "Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico." He encouraged his daughters to "live now" in the present, to "fall in love," and to "find something that excites you." Eric emphasized that his condition forced him to "embrace alternatives" and urged his daughters to "fight" through hard times, reminding them of their resilience. He concluded his message with "Goodnight" and "I love you," which were his last words.
