The case surrounding the death of former rock sensation and Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain is now being challenged. According to multiple news reports, new forensic investigators believe that Cobain's death, ruled a suicide in 1994, may actually have been a murder staged to look like a suicide. The 27-year-old guitarist was found dead in his greenhouse with what Seattle authorities determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Independent researcher Michelle Wilkins, alongside a team of forensic experts including Brian Burnett, has concluded that the circumstances surrounding Cobain's death are inconsistent with a typical self-inflicted gunshot wound. This news was first reported by The Daily Mail.

Burnett, who has decades of experience with overdose and gunshot cases, such as the Marine Colonel James Sabow case, reviewed autopsy files and photographs before reaching his conclusion. He and his team shared with The Daily Mail that the evidence suggests foul play. They believe that one or more assailants may have forced Cobain to write a suicide note, then administered heroin to incapacitate him before shooting him and placing the shotgun in his left hand. The team indicated that Cobain's organ damage aligned with oxygen deprivation caused by a heroin overdose, suggesting he was unable to pull the trigger himself. They also raised questions about the blood patterns at the crime scene, the ejection of the shotgun shell, and the position of Cobain's hands.
Kurt Cobain's body remained in his greenhouse for three days before being discovered by an electrician, who was on the property to install security cameras, on April 8th.

Kurt Cobain reportedly struggled with chronic pain, depression, and drug addiction. His cousin, Beverly Cobain, who is a nurse, informed the Fosters Daily Democrat in 2005 that their family has a history of suicide and depression, noting that two of her uncles had taken their own lives. After battling her own mental health challenges, Beverly, who was a mental health and psychiatric nurse for 11 years at the time of the interview, and a registered nurse since 1976, decided to start lecturing on suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
Currently, the King County Medical Examiner and the Seattle Police have not decided to reopen the case for a homicide investigation. King County submitted a comment to Newsweek, they stated, “In the death examination for Kurt Cobain, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office worked with the local law enforcement agency, conducted a full autopsy, and followed all of its procedures in coming to the determination of the manner of death as a suicide,” a King County Public Health spokesperson told the publication. They continued, “We’re not able to provide specific details about what informed our conclusion, as the autopsy records are private under state law and can only be released by the next of kin.” The statement concluded, “Our office is always open to revisiting its conclusions if new evidence comes to light, but we’ve seen nothing to date that would warrant re-opening of this case and our previous determination of death.”
