Derrick Groves was the last of ten inmates to be captured after escaping from the New Orleans Justice Center nearly five months ago.
The 28-year-old was apprehended on Wednesday following a standoff with Atlanta police and U.S. Marshals. Groves had been convicted last year of murdering two people using an assault rifle during a Mardi Gras block party, a violent incident that resulted in the deaths of two young men and injuries to several others. Consequently, Groves was facing a life sentence in prison without parole, according to Yahoo.
After alllegedly being assisted by prison staff, the ten inmates reportedly escaped from jail through a hole created behind a toilet on May 16.
According to CNN, here's how the escape unfolded:
Just after midnight on May 16, a corrections monitoring technician in New Orleans stepped away to get food. At that moment, the Orleans Justice Center had been in lockdown since 10:30 p.m., as usual, requiring inmates to remain in their cells for the night.
During the technician's absence, several inmates began tampering with the door of Cell Delta 1006. They forced the door open and slipped into the handicap cell, where they used electric hair trimmers with clipper blades to cut through the cell walls behind the toilet, as reported by a source with direct knowledge of the investigation.
It is believed that they reattached the toilet to conceal the hole after escaping.
Before all ten inmates fled the New Orleans jail and crossed the Louisiana interstate into the warm, muggy night, they left a message on a wall that read, “To Easy LoL.”
Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair told CNN that a tip received through Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, combined with further investigative work, led to Groves' arrest in Atlanta. Fair explained, “It took almost three hours to locate him in the house. Gas had to be deployed multiple times by the Atlanta Police Department’s SWAT team, and he was eventually found hiding in a crawl space.”
Louisiana's Attorney General, Liz Murrill, announced that Groves will be taken to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, where the other nine escaped inmates are currently being held.
