A dead body found in California allegedly may be connected to the 2020 death of 20-year-old rapper Pop Smoke. A lifeguard discovered the naked body of Javonnta Murphy on July 31 in a barrel on Malibu Lagoon State Beach in California. According to multiple sources, Javonnta's brother, Jaquan Murphy, was among numerous people charged with the rapper's 2020 murder. However, Jaquan was cleared of the charges, yet Malibu authorities believe Javonnta's murder is likely retaliation for Pop Smoke's death.

According to HipHopDX, an 18-year-old, who was a minor at the time of Pop Smoke's death, admitted to murdering the rap star, whose legal name was Bashar Barakah Jackson, during a home invasion in Los Angeles. The teen pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion in May 2023. HipHopDX stated that he would be remanded to a juvenile facility until he's 25. Corey Walker, 19, Keandre Rodgers, 18, and two others were also charged with his death. Authorities believed Bashar's home was targeted after his location and material possessions were shared via social media.
Pop Smoke was rising in popularity. The New York-born rapper was considered the face of "Brooklyn Drill," a new rap genre. Bashar's community continues to celebrate him as an artist.
