Muni Long has lupus and recently sat down with Good Morning America to talk about her health and recovery from an unexpected double lung transplant surgery.

Muni said she became ill during Brandy and Monica’s "The Boy Is Mine” tour and reportedly left the tour early. Muni, who has lupus, explained to GMA that she fell ill during Thanksgiving and woke up hospitalized.

The singer said during her hospitalization the doctors told her that she had one week to live unless she got the transplant. She told Robin Roberts on GMA, “My jaw dropped. Literally. I was like, ‘That’s rude.’ But they were kind of like, ‘This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice, or you can get these lungs."

While touring, she reportedly contracted pneumonia, which caused additional complications due to her lupus. She said her energy was low on stage, “I just barely made it. I was only able to do two songs.” She said during the interview that she “knew for a really long time that something was wrong, because she said she was spitting out fluid in cups every day and “coughing all the time” while trying to take “all these medicines.”

The Grammy Award winner said she underwent vocal surgery as well. She told GMA that her voice is “different” following the surgery, but it’s actually “better.” She explained that she’s been given a clean bill of health, but still has to wait up to a year post-op before performing again.

Lupus heavily impacts the body’s organs, joints, skin, and blood cells. Mini discussed with Essence how the condition impairs her lifestyle; she said, “Please turn the air off when I come in the building. I'm not being a diva, but literally if I get too cold, I start coughing, and I won't be able to sing,” Long shares. “And then when I get off stage, I have to lay down immediately and wrap up in covers and steam my voice.”

Muni recently released two new singles, “Richest” and "AIN'T U TIRED?”, which she recorded before her operations. She expects to get back to work, as she said during her interview; she’s had “last appointment for all things.”

Good luck to Muni with maintaining good health.
