After a recent video depicting former President Barack and Michele Obama as apes appeared on President Trump's Truth Social account, the President gave his rationale for the video and explained that he will not apologize for the video.
Trump explained that he looked at the video before it was posted, and it was about "voter fraud." The President explained, "We took it down as soon as we found out about it. A reporter advised the President that people are calling on him to apologize for the post, and he replied, "I didn't make a mistake...I look at thousands of things. I looked at the beginning of it, and it was fine...I guess it was a take off of The Lion King...It was a very strong post in terms of voter fraud. Nobody knew that that was in the end; if they would have looked, they would have seen it and probably had the sense to take it down."
Several Americans observed that the video was available for 12 hours before the White House took it down. The full video depicted Trump as a lion to symbolize "the king of the jungle." It also featured altered images of former President Joe Biden, Gavin Newsom, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all created using AI.
Numerous politicians, celebrities, and citizens have demanded an apology from the White House regarding this incident. USA Today reported several comments from politicians, including U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts, R-Nebraska, who stated on X, "Even if this was a Lion King meme, a reasonable person sees the racist context to this. The White House should do what anyone does when they make a mistake: remove this and apologize." In response to Trump's post, the X account called Republicans Against Trump commented, "there's no bottom." Congressman Roger Wicker, R-Mississippi, said the post was "totally unacceptable" and called on the President to apologize.
