Children's entertainer Paul Reubens who starred as Pee-wee Herman, passed away at 70 on Sunday, per his team's announcement via Instagram. He was reportedly battling cancer. Pee-wee was an uber-popular children's character who was the face of the hit show Pee-wee's Playhouse during the '80s and early '90s.

In 1991, during a significant part of his career, Paul was arrested in Florida for indecent exposure after allegedly being caught openly masturbating in an adult theater. This case damaged his brand, resulting in the show ending early. Yet, the actor periodically made films under the franchise until 2016. Years later, Reubens found more legal troubles after being investigated for child pornography.

However, Reubens was extremely talented and able to secure work as a character actor for several Hollywood films throughout the years. He made the following apology to his fans before his passing: “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
