Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was assaulted by a male bystander who sprayed her with an unknown substance in a syringe during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis. This incident occurred after she suggested that U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Christi Noem should resign or face impeachment.
Security quickly restrained the man after the incident. Her colleagues urged her to get checked out after she complained that the liquid had a very foul smell. However, Ilhan was determined to continue the meeting. She stated, "We're gonna keep talking, please don't let them have a show, just give me ten more minutes."
Omar, a Somali refugee who arrived in America as a preteen, has had a contentious relationship with the Trump administration. Recently, President Trump made comments about the Congresswoman, suggesting that she should go back to her country and referring to her and fellow Somalis as "garbage."
As a U.S. Representative, Omar has been outspoken about U.S. foreign policy and human rights, and she opposes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In her most recent statement about the ICE-related killings in Minneapolis, she said, "This appears to be an execution by immigration enforcement. I am absolutely heartbroken, horrified, and appalled that federal agents murdered another member of our community. It is beyond shameful that these federal agents are targeting our residents instead of protecting them. This isn’t isolated or accidental." The U.S. Rep said she believes the Trump administration is trying to beat Americans into "submission."
According to CNN, the Minneapolis Police Department confirmed that the man accused of attacking Omar is 55-year-old Anthony J. Kazmierczak, as reported by a spokesperson for the Minneapolis Police Department.
When President Trump asked if he had reviewed the video of the incident, he responded, “No. I don’t think about her. I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her,” according to ABC News via CNN.
Representative Omar stated that she will not be defeated by the current situation. According to CNN, she explained that she's “survived war” and will “definitely going to survive intimidation and whatever these people think that they can throw at me because I’m built that way.”
