Millions of Americans united to participate in the 'No Kings' protest against the Trump Administration. It is estimated that approximately seven million people took part in peaceful demonstrations yesterday.
Key issues motivating the current rallies include the ongoing unconstitutional and unlawful ICE raids in various US cities, the potential suspension of SNAP benefits in November, and the infringement on Americans' constitutional rights. Due to the current shutdown, the Trump administration also stated that it may not award all federal workers back pay. Yet, the Senate unanimously passed the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act in 2019, to circumvent these types of situations, according to House.gov. The U.S. currently has over 3 million federal workers.
Los Angeles reportedly had strong turnout. According to ABC 7, "The event featured a 20-foot-tall balloon of President Donald Trump wearing a diaper, a 20-foot-wide by 3-foot-tall banner that read "No Kings for U.S.," and thousands of handmade signs by participants as they marched along a nearly two-mile stretch down Spring Street."
"The L.A. protest was organized by 50501 SoCal and Service Employees International Union Local 721, in partnership with Black Lives Matter Grassroots - Los Angeles, the Removal Coalition, Working Families Party, Black Women for Wellness, Clergy Laity United for Economic Justice, the TransLatin@ Coalition, Democracy Action Network, and the Human Liberation Coalition, among others."
Chicago's protest reportedly stretched for two miles within the Loop. According to NBC 5 Chicago, the protest was motivated by controversial immigration enforcement operations known as "Operation Midway Blitz," along with a legal debate concerning the use of National Guard troops in the city. Over the past several months, Chicago has faced ongoing scrutiny for its harsh ICE arrests, impacting many individuals, including U.S. citizens, often without provocation.
According to NYPD News, there were no protest-related arrests made by the NYPD. They also reported that approximately 100,000 protesters attended across all five boroughs, with a particularly strong presence in Times Square.
According to FOX, House Speaker Mike Johnson called the planned protests "a hate America rally." Johnson stated, "We're so angry about it. I mean, I'm a very patient guy, but I've had it with these people."
