A 31-year-old woman from Georgia, Alexia Moore, has been charged with murder after taking abortion pills to terminate her pregnancy. She allegedly violated Georgia's heartbeat law, which prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, the point at which a heartbeat can be detected.
According to the Associated Press, Moore's fetus survived for nearly an hour after delivery when she sought medical care for pain in December.
It remains unclear which clinic or physician prescribed the abortion medication.
Georgia law bans abortions after six weeks of gestation. Medical staff at the hospital reported that the fetus was over six weeks old, had a beating heart, and was struggling to breathe.
Authorities in Camden County arrested Moore on March 4 on charges of murder and illegal drug possession, as noted in online jail records.
According to the arrest warrant, Moore told the nursing staff, “I know my infant is suffering because I am the one who did the abortion. I want her to die.”
In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the 1973 landmark decision Roe v. Wade, which established a Constitutional right for women to choose to have abortions.
