The shooting reportedly occurred after a fight at Cardoza's home, leading to multiple gunshots and Cardoza’s subsequent death at a nearby hospital.
Before this incident, David had no prior criminal convictions. According to Complex, Blake Jr. addressed the courtroom before sentencing, expressing remorse to the victim's family. He said he was sorry for his involvement and shared that he feared for his safety during the confrontation, insisting he believed his life was in danger at the time. He also rejected being labeled a murderer, saying the situation unfolded rapidly.

Complex further reported that The shooting occurred on May 25, 2022, after Blake Jr. drove to the victim's family home with his employer, former Compton City Councilman Isaac Galvan. According to court findings, a confrontation unfolded, and Blake Jr. later fired a weapon from the vehicle. While the defense argued he had seen a shotgun earlier, the court determined the victim was not armed at the time he was shot.
Despite Blake's testimony about going to the victim's home with former Councilman Galvan, Galvan did not testify as a witness during the trial.
According to The Downey Patriot, Attorney Joseph Gutierrez noted that 27 letters praising Blake's devotion to the community, church, and public service were submitted to the judge, adding that his client's life had been "exemplary" without any prior arrests before the shooting.
While the judge stated that she believed most of Blake Jr.'s testimony, she still questioned his judgment regarding the shooting. The music producer's legal team was unsuccessful in getting his charges reduced to manslaughter.
