Clive Davis, the legendary music executive who was deeply immersed in R&B music, has died at 94. His family confirmed that he passed away at his home in Manhattan on Monday, June 22, 2026, following a recent hospitalization.
Davis was a powerhouse in the music industry, and celebrated for his remarkable ability to recognize talent across various genres. He founded Arista Records and, in 2000, established J Records. Additionally, he served as Sony's Chief Creative Officer. In the early stages of his career, he worked as General Counsel for Columbia Records, later becoming Vice President, General Manager, and ultimately President of the label. Among his many accolades, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000.
Davis played a crucial role in helping L.A. Reid and Babyface establish LaFace Records, which was home to acts like TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher, OutKast, and Pink.
He also helped Sean "Diddy" Combs in founding Bad Boy Records, which featured artists such as Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Mase, 112, Carl Thomas, and Total.
Davis is often credited as the engine behind Whitney Houston's music career. He discovered her in the 1980s, and she was later hailed as "the greatest voice of this generation." He played a significant role in shaping Whitney's career, notably her remake of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which became the centerpiece of The Bodyguard soundtrack, which was her biggest hit. This rendition won multiple Grammys, and several other music awards, as well as global success.
Throughout his career, Clive signed, mentored, and rejuvenated the careers of numerous artists, including Barbra Streisand, Monica, Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Earth, Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart, Luther Vandross, Usher, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Herbie Hancock, and The Isley Brothers, among many others.
There are stories that Davis fought for Monica's career on several occasions, even blocking record executives from taking away her hit song, "Before You Walk Out of My Life." Monica has referred to Davis as " a friend, mentor, and one of the most influential figures in music," acknowledging that she would not have her career without his steadfast support.
Many associations and unforgettable events marked Davis's long career in the industry. For decades, he hosted the "Clive Davis" party, an exclusive, by-invitation-only A-list music industry event held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
Clive's net worth is reportedly $850 million. One of his last major projects in entertainment was the 2022 Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
Celebrity tributes have been pouring in on social media for the late music mogul. Alicia Keys shared a special tribute on Instagram, stating:

He has stood beside me through every chapter that followed. Not just in that fake industry way but in a way that was full of love for how unlimited I could be! He called me a renaissance woman! His impact reaches far beyond music. It lives in the countless artists he championed, the dreams he helped bring to life, and the love he poured into so many!
If he didn't see in me the glimmer of what was to become, you and I may have never known each other and be on this deep musical journey.
