Cesar Pina, a real estate mogul who partnered with The Breakfast Club's DJ Envy and appeared on the iHeart Radio show to promote opportunities in the real estate industry, has been arrested and faces federal indictments for "a multimillion-dollar Ponzi-like investment fraud scheme," according to Billboard.
Billboard reports, "The charges come after months of social media accusations and civil litigation against Pina, who victims say stole their money with promises of big profits. DJ Envy (real name RaaShaun Casey) has been caught up in the scheme because critics say he helped promote Pina, including through appearances on his nationally syndicated hip-hop radio show The Breakfast Club — accusations he denies."
Reportedly, over 30 investors have claimed that Cesar scammed them out of $40 million while promising them they would see lucrative investment returns. According to the US Attorney's Office, Pena was charged with wire fraud and released on a $1 million secured bond with electronic monitoring. The USAO also reported, “As alleged in the complaint, Pina exploited celebrity status and social media to develop a devoted following of potential victims. Promising returns that were too good to be true, Pina allegedly defrauded dozens of people of millions of dollars. Our office is committed to protecting the public from these schemes and prosecuting those who lie to investors for their own personal gain.”
While DJ Envy has not been charged with any crimes, the USAO said, "Pina partnered with a celebrity disc jockey and radio personality to conduct real estate seminars around the country. Through these seminars, self-promotional efforts, and other marketing strategies, Pina developed a significant social media following." After Pina was reportedly released from prison, he became a real estate mogul, creating a large following as an influencer and developing relationships with other celebrities.
