Spanish actress Ana Obregon is criticized for using a surrogate to carry a baby conceived by her egg and her late son's sperm. The 68-year-old star said her deceased son, Aless wished to have a child before he died from cancer three years ago.
Ana resides in Spain, and the surrogate mother lives in Miami. The child was born on March 20th, and custody was transferred to Ana and her husband, Alessandro Lequio, following the birth. Part of the controversy arises from Spain's stringent rules on surrogacy. According to CNN, in Spain, surrogacy is illegal, and sperm samples can only be used to impregnate a widowed partner within 12 months of the donor's death with their explicit permission.
As far as Ana's explanation about the surrogacy, she told Hola Magazine, "This baby girl is not my daughter, but my granddaughter. She is Aless' daughter, and when she grows up I will tell her that her father was a hero so that she knows who she is and how proud she should be of him." She also explained in the interview that her son froze his sperm as soon as he was diagnosed with cancer, even before starting chemotherapy, so that the radiation would not negatively impact his sperm. The actress revealed that Aless told his parents a week before he died that he wanted Ana to bring his child into the world; that was his last wish while alive. The star believes that any parent who has lost a child can understand why she wanted to fulfill her son's wish!
