Will Smith Gave An Emotional Acceptance Speech After Slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars

After winning best leading actor for King Richard at this year's Oscar Awards, Will Smith gave an emotionally charged and tear-filled acceptance speech that was triggered by him slapping fellow actor Chris Rock moments before his win.

Smith got up from his seat, walked on stage, and hit Chris minutes after making a crude joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith's bald head. After returning to his seat, Will yelled out, "keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth!"

Last night's actions were atypical of Will Smith's normal pleasant, fun, and peaceful media image. Yet, the Smith family and Chris have had some public exchanges over the years. During the 2016 Oscar Awards, Rock also called out Will and Jada's decision to boycott the Oscars that year. He's also made online comments about the Smith family in the past. The fact that Jada has publicly stated that she suffers from the hair loss disorder, alopecia-and has decided to shave her hair; as a result, Rock's remark about her bald head did seem rather crude.

Will was able to gain his composure to make his acceptance speech. During his speech, Will thanked several people, including Denzel Washington, for being a voice of reason amidst the night's confusion. Here's some of his speech:

"I know, to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse. You gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you, and you gotta smile and pretend like that's OK. Denzel [Washington] said to me a few minutes ago, "At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you." I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena… and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story."
