A transgender woman and influencer, Perysian Zaya Mekhi shared on social media that her passport was changed and updated to reflect her birth gender, which is male. Perysian stated, "Now, mind you, all of my other documents are updated to female, and I've been fully surgically updated to female, but this is what they had to say," while showing that her passport now reflects an M for male in the video. According to the online influencer, the government mailed her a corrected passport and a letter that read, "The sex was corrected on your passport application. The changes were made for one of the following reasons - to match our record." The content creator mentioned taking legal action as a result of the change.

Requiring men and women to identify with the gender they were assigned at birth (for legal purposes) was another promise Trump made during his campaign. President Trump said the nation will only acknowledge two sexes, male and female. The President also implemented an executive order that outlaws sex-change procedures for minors.

During President Trump's inaugural address, he stated, "As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female."

According to TIME, the President's executive order "Accuses "ideologues" of denying "the biological reality of sex" and dismisses gender identity, calling it "disconnected from biological reality." It declares that all federal agencies and employees will henceforth use the term "sex," not "gender," in all applicable policies and document and that government-issued forms of identifications will "accurately reflect the holder's sex."

As stated by The Guardian, "Secretary of State Marco Rubio sent an internal memo to Department of State staff asking them to pause all gender marker update applications, as well as halting requests for the "X" gender marker on a passport, which was rolled out in 2022 for nonbinary folks." Trump's executive order denies the legal recognition of transgender and nonbinary people, barring them from updating their gender on federal documents, such as passports, visas, and Global Entry cards, per TIME.

However, this change does not impact state identification, except for the states that previously honored the ban. Florida, Texas, and Montana passed laws that restrict or prohibit changes to gender markers on driver's licenses. Tennessee and North Dakota have also made laws that prevent one's gender from being changed on birth certificates.

The gender versus sex debate has been ongoing for decades. Some agree that although sex is biologically assigned, gender is whether an individual feels like they are male, female, nonbinary, or another gender classification.
