Missy Elliott curated a tribute to the late R&B princess, Aaliyah during this year’s Essence Festival. Several artists, including Mya, Chloe, and Sevyn Streeter, performed music from Aaliyah's catalogue while while donning outfits inspired by the iconic artist.

Missy, who was a close friend and former music producer for Aaliyah, felt it was time to honor the star with a musical tribute.

Despite Aaliyah's untimely death in 2001, resulting from a plane crash in the Bahamas that also claimed the lives of eight others, including her hairdresser, bodyguard, a record executive, and the plane's pilot, her musical legacy continues to thrive.

Aaliyah passed away shortly after the release of her self-titled third album, Aaliyah, just as she was on the verge of transforming her career. Her loss left a significant void in the music industry.

At the time of her death, Aaliyah had recently completed the filming for Queen of the Damned and was cast as "Zee" in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. She was preparing for her Aaliyah tour and had begun filming for The Matrix Revolutions when the tragic crash occurred.

Throughout her career, Aaliyah released three albums that were certified platinum by the RIAA and starred in two successful Hollywood films. She acted alongside Jet Li in Romeo Must Die, played the Vampress, Queen Akasha, in Queen of the Damned, and held production credits on the Romeo Must Die album. Aaliyah received numerous nominations and awards, including accolades from the American Music Awards, the Grammys, as well as the Academy Awards.

Many celebrities still regard her death as one of the most significant losses the music industry has faced. On Brandy’s album Aphrodisiac, she referenced Aaliyah, saying, “This industry was more like a different world / When it was just me, Monica, and baby girl Aaliyah / I never got to tell you how much you meant / I wish you and me both were sittin' here workin' with Tim, on "Should I Go"

Fans rejoiced when her music finally became available on streaming platforms in 2021, with artists such as Drake, OutKast, Frank Ocean, Normani, SZA, and The Weeknd celebrating her influence.

Aaliyah's tribute pages on social media continue to grow as fans honor her legacy in entertainment 25 years after her passing.
