ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) protesters took over the 101 freeway in Los Angeles on Sunday. CBS reported that a few thousand people lined up on Olvera Street and marched to City Hall before walking onto the highway to protest the raids and deportation of several undocumented Spanish-speaking residents.
The Los Angeles Times said, "The protests continued into the evening. After a citywide tactical alert was issued around 7 p.m., L.A. police officers were deployed downtown in riot gear, equipped with helmets, batons and less-than-lethal weapons, according to Tony Im, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department."
Along with carrying Mexican and Salvadoran flags, some protesters held signs that said, "MAGA — Mexicans always get across"; "Don't bite the hand that feeds you," referring to the state's agricultural workers; and "I drink my horchata warm because f— I.C.E.," a reference to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, according to the Los Angeles Times, who followed the protest.
Deportation is a massive part of the Trump administration's agenda. However, some countries have refused to take immigrants, such as Colombia, where President Gustavo Petro rejected at least two flights that transported immigrants before negotiating with the United States.
Countries can block deportation flights from landing, decline to issue travel documents to their citizens, and refuse to acknowledge that the deportees are their citizens, as explained by CBS.
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that "The president announced plans to set up a detention camp at the U.S. military base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. "We have 30,000 beds in Guantánamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people," President Trump said. "Some of them are so bad we don't even trust the countries to hold them, because we don't want them coming back, so we're going to send them out to Guantánamo."
ICE agents can pick up deportees from "sensitive locations," such as schools and churches, with a warrant.
